Chiropractic Explained

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic may very well be one of the least understood philosophies of life and health. It is based upon a few very simple ideas.

The body is designed with an inborn ability to maintain itself in a state of proper function. A newborn baby may seem small, fragile and helpless, but within that body is the ability to make food into living tissue, to heal cuts and bruises, to adapt to changes in the environment, to produce the chemicals necessary to perform every bodily function, to fight off invading organisms, and to live as much as 100 or more years. In short, to lead a healthy, productive life.

The brain and nerve system are the primary tools by which we attain proper function, what we commonly call “health.” Every organ, gland and cell in the body depends upon messages carried to and from the brain to function in a coordinated manner so that each part can benefit the whole body, producing a full and healthy life.

Interference in the nerve system reduces the body’s ability to function in a coordinated manner. A corpse has a brain and nerve system, but it does not have life. There is no power or energy flowing over the nerve system. Similarly, a paralyzed person has lost function due to injury to the nerve system. Even slight damage to the delicate and vital nerve system can reduce the body’s ability to function at its fullest potential.

A spinal misalignment that interferes with the nerve system (called a “vertebral subluxation”) creates a reduction in coordinated function. Slight misalignments of the bones of the spine caused by everyday, common activities can interfere with the ability of the nerve system to carry messages that are necessary for the successful accomplishment of those everyday activities, not the least of which is the attainment of maximum health.

Chiropractors correct vertebral subluxations. In our office, the single objective of the chiropractor is to locate and correct vertebral subluxation in adults and children so that families and entire communities are able to express life at a higher level.

If you and your family are not seeing a chiropractor regularly, you are not doing all you should for your life and health. It’s as simple as that!
Symptoms & Solutions
Chiropractic care is not a treatment for disease and conditions in the medical sense. It is rather the attempt to restore health and spinal integrity by realigning the vertebrae of the spine to allow the normal transmission of nerve impulses from the brain to the body. When restored brain body communication is facilitated and maintained, many diseases and conditions self correct.

However, the chiropractic profession recognizes that both the state of health and the presence of disease may be a consequence of multiple factors and not every condition will respond to spinal adjustments. Here we reference specific disorders to published studies that appear to show, from a clinical standpoint, a relationship between the patient's health complaint and the correction or reduction of the upper cervical subluxation.

The conditions range from various musculoskeletal complaints to conditions affecting almost every organ system of the human body. The following is a review of the peer-reviewed literature and presentations at research conferences that reveals the documented correlation between upper cervical specific chiropractic care and the improvement of various musculoskeletal complaints.

Musculoskeletal Complaints
• Neck pain/dysfunction
• Cervical herniated disc
• Cervical curve distortion
• Cervicobrachialgia
• Motor vehicle trauma
• Scalenus anticus syndrome
• Torticollis
• Headaches
• Low back pain
• Postural distortion
• Scoliosis
• Knee pain

Whole Body Health Complaints
Peer reviewed studies, case reports, and research presentations have documented direct or indirect improvement from upper cervical care of various health related issues such as:
• Ageusia
• Anosmia
• Arnold-Chiari malformation
• Asthma
• Athletic performance
• Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Autism
• Bell’s palsy
• Bone density
• Bowel dysfunction
• Cerebral Palsy
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Clonus
• Cystic hygroma
• Diabetes type II
• Febrility
• Health enhancement
• Hearing loss
• Hepatocellular carcinoma
• HIV
• Hypertension
• Infantile colic
• Meniere’s disease
• Mental disorders
• Multiple sclerosis
• Nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting)
• Otalgia/otitis media
• Parkinson’s disease
• Pulmonary function
• Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
• Scheuermann’s disease
• Seizure disorders
• Sleep disorders
• Stomach problems
• Tinnitus/vertigo
• Tourette’s syndrome
• Trigeminal neuralgia (TN)
• Visual acuity

The abundance of case reports and studies presented provides compelling evidence regarding the deleterious effects of the upper cervical subluxation and the potential benefits of upper cervical care. This research is more impressive when one considers how few doctors worldwide are proficient in this procedure and how little financial support has been given for research. Given the anatomical, bio-mechanical and neurological complexity of the upper cervical spine, this sub-specialty of chiropractic care is an underutilized aspect of providing comprehensive healthcare.
